Product Detail

On the morning of Sunday 24 January 1965 Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill KG, OM, CH, TD, FRS, PC died aged 90 at his home having suffered a severe stroke nine days earlier.

The funeral was attended by one of the largest gatherings of statesmen the world had ever seen – it was the start of a remarkable series of events that confirmed Churchill’s position in the hearts of the British people and those around the world.

Churchill was taken to his final resting place by a funeral train of Pullman Coaches. Thousands stood in silence to pay their last respects in fields along the route and at the stations through which the train passed. He was buried at St Martin’s Church, Bladon, (not far from his birth place at Blenheim Palace).

Not long after his death the Churchill Commemorative Crown Coin was announced on 16 March 1965. It was to be the first coin to feature the head of a commoner on the same coin as the head of a monarch – and only four other commemorative coins had ever been issued in the UK. Churchill’s portrait was commissioned from his favourite sculptor, Oscar Nemon.
