Constantine The Great - renowned emperor

Constantine The Great remains one of the best-known of all Roman emperors. He was acclaimed Emperor of the Western Provinces at York in 306 - the only one ever to do so on British soil. An ambitious and distinguished leader, Constantine became sole ruler of the Roman empire in 324.

To mark his accession, he ordered a new capital of the Roman empire to be constructed. Just 6 years later, in 330, the ancient Greek colony of Byzantium was transformed into the great city of Constantinople.
