Celebrating the 500th anniversary of one of our nation's greatest ever monarchs: King Henry VIII
This year marks the 500th anniversary of the accession of one of our greatest ever monarchs. Henry VIII was also one of the most colourful - even controversial - kings this nation has ever had, and the events of his reign helped shape the society in which we live.
To commemorate this landmark event, The London Mint Office is proud to announce the release of a special commemorative coin that combines gold, silver and precious gem stones, including an exotic black sapphire.
The design of this new commemorative crown features a lifelike portrait of King Henry with a Tudor rose in the field to the right of the king. The legends are in Latin, to match those on Henry's own coinage of the sixteenth century.
Henry VIII never struck a silver crown coin - his son and heir Edward VI was the first monarch in English history to strike one in 1551 - but were he to, this 500th anniversary crown with its latin legends and fine portrait may be close to how it would have looked.
It is fitting that this coin denomination, first struck by Henry's son and heir, should now, 500 years later, be struck to celebrate this significant anniversary of his accession.
For these reasons this new coin is likely to attract considerable interest, not just from collectors.
