It is said that St George appeared to King Edward and presented him with his Coat of Arms and imbued him with a spirit of virtue and bravery. St George went on to become the favoured saint of England. The London Mint Office is proud to announce the release of a commemorative £5 coin in honour of St George.
The design features St George on horseback, slaying the dragon with his lance - an image that has a long association with British coins, appearing on the gold sovereign for almost two centuries. This long tradition is one of the reasons that this new coin is likely to attract considerable interest, not just from collectors.
