The world’s first official adhesive postage stamp, the Penny Black, was issued on 1st May 1840. It bore a portrait of the young Queen Victoria by the acclaimed coin engraver William Wyon. His design, which originally appeared on a medal commemorating her visit to the City of London in 1837, was sketched by Henry Corbould for Charles and Frederick Heath to engrave onto the special die required for printing sheets of stamps. 

In 2015, to mark the 175th anniversary of the Penny Black, a commemorative gold coin was struck and selectively finished in Ruthenium Gold. The intricately engraved design recreates the iconic stamp from ‘Plate 11’ which was one of the rarest issues. 

Wyon’s original design was based on a sketch he had made of Victoria when she was fifteen years old. It was to remain on British stamps for the entirety of her long reign, until her death at the age of eighty-one in 1901.
