The South African Krugerrand was the world’s first bullion investment coin. It was introduced in 1967 and became instantly popular. It was struck to size in order to provide buyers with precise amounts of pure gold - one ounce, half ounce, quarter ounce and tenth ounce.

Many buyers invest in gold during times of world crisis although in recent times investors have been buying gold as a hedge against the falling purchasing power of paper-backed currencies. This is why in recent years the world price of gold has been rising.

The obverse side carries the portrait of Paul Kruger, First President of the Zuid Afrikaansche Reipublik while the reverse carries the Springbok, an animal native to South Africa.
