The London Mint Office is very proud to present a beautiful celebration of the legend of Saint George, and the virtues of honour, courage and kindness that he demonstrated.

A soldier believed to have been martyred for his refusal to persecute Christians in the third century on the orders of the cruel Emperor Diocletian, George became an inspirational figure in the early church.  However, the story of how he fought a fearsome dragon didn’t appear in writing until about eight centuries after his death.

In 1099 English soldiers fighting in Jerusalem claimed that George had miraculously appeared to them and spurred them on to fight valiantly. A century later, King Richard called upon the saint to protect his army and adopted the white flag with the red cross of the Christian martyr as his emblem.

In 1348, King Edward III (1327-77) decided that the man who combined the saintly characteristics of honour and kindness with the soldierly qualities of honour and courage would be the perfect choice for England’s patron Saint.  He also made the dragon slayer the emblem of the Knights of the Garter, the highest honour that he could bestow on subjects who exemplified his noble qualities.

The story of Saint George has inspired the acclaimed coin artist Angela Pistrucci to create a strikingly original depiction of our national hero on a rearing horse as he prepares to charge into battle with the dragon.  In his outstretched arm, he proudly holds his shield aloft, emblazoned with a red cross on a white background that identifies him as a courageous man of faith and a champion of righteousness.

Struck to the highest possible Proof quality finish, The Legend of Saint George: Honour, Courage and Kindness coin is encapsulated to protect it from fingerprints and accidental damage and can be safely stored in an innovative picture book, which includes a new retelling of the famous story with full-colour illustrations by Angela Pistrucci.

Angela is the great-great-great niece of the Italian artist Benedetto Pistrucci, who engraved Saint George and the Dragon for the modern gold sovereign in 1817.   She studied her craft at the highly prestigious Italian Mint in Rome, where her work is now proudly exhibited alongside Benedetto's.
