An Everlasting Act of Remembrance

The Armistice & Remembrance 100 Sovereign Range has been designed by artist Maurice Pierse. The coins will be struck in 22 carat gold and to the highest Proof Quality – the pinnacle of the minter’s art. The story begins at the first major battle of the First World War and coin by coin, the range chronologically depicts the key battles and events from each year of the conflict. Initially we see portrayals of hope and vulnerability which hastily transition into scenes of destruction and devastation.

For nearly a century, this nation has honoured our war dead with an annual service of remembrance. The Cenotaph in Whitehall, London is the focal point of these commemorations, and its huge monument bears the simple inscription; “The Glorious Dead”. The losses incurred on the battlefield were far from glorious. Every death was a lost opportunity, an unrealised potential stolen forever, and a heart-breaking tragedy for loved ones left behind. The glory of their sacrifice lies not in the brutal manner of their deaths but in the enduring significance of their legacy, which has been to ensure the safety, security and freedom that we still enjoy many decades later.

With no remaining veterans from the First World War, now more than ever, it is important to remember their stories and keep their memories alive for future generations.
