This ground-breaking coin represents a number of significant firsts in US numismatic history. It was the first regular issue half dollar to feature a real historical person instead of a figure emblematic of liberty. It also broke with the prevailing trend for the US currency to depict past presidents by showing, instead, one of America’s Founding Fathers – Benjamin Franklin. Finally, it was the first to depict the Liberty Bell on a US circulating coin. In combining images of both Franklin and the Liberty Bell, the Franklin half dollar celebrates the history of Independence and of America’s spirit and values, making it the perfect addition to The US Silver Heritage Collection.
Obverse: The very first US regular-issue coin to hold the portrait of a non-president. The design features a right-facing bust of Benjamin Franklin, with the inscriptions “LIBERTY” above, and “IN GOD WE TRUST” below, followed by the date. By John R. Sinnock.
Reverse: The Franklin Half Dollar was the first circulating US coin to depict the Liberty Bell - a symbol of American independence. On the right of the bell is a small eagle and on the left the motto of the US “E PLURIBUS UNUM”. Inscriptions around the periphery read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” above, and “HALF DOLLAR” below. By John R. Sinnock.
