In 2019 we celebrated the 200th anniversary year of the birth of Queen Victoria and her consort, Prince Albert – a momentous royal anniversary.
To commemorate the birthdays, an exclusive limited edition Yellow Half Sovereign was issued featuring a conjoined portrait of a loving young couple, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
The design has been based upon a bronze medal by medallist William Edward Wyon (1795–1851) intended for distribution to the exhibitors of the Great Exhibition of 1851 and features a conjoined portrait of the young Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
Commemorating the birth of the Victoria & Albert Museum’s two illustrious namesakes, the half sovereign was produced in official partnership with the Victoria and Albert Museum – and features an exclusive privy mark of the V&A logo.
Yellow Gold
Striking sovereigns in yellow gold is extremely rare, and so it is an equally rare privilege to be able to offer a range of official, legal tender sovereigns struck to this beautiful and unusual specification.
For two hundred years, Sovereigns have been struck with an alloy of 91.67% gold and the remaining composition made with copper. In 1887, Queen Victoria marked an astonishing 50 years on the throne. In celebration of this momentous milestone, a brand new Sovereign specification was created, struck for just one year only.
1.25% of the copper content was replaced with pure Silver to strike this brand new specification – the Yellow Gold Sovereign. 1887 Sovereigns struck in Yellow Gold are famously one of the most significant collector coins of the Victorian Age.
Strictly limited to just 1,840, the year that Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were married, this beautiful half sovereign is an everlasting tribute to this royal love story.
