On June 28th, 1914 a shot rang out in Sarajevo, ending over 40 years of peace in Europe. In little more than a month after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the First World War had begun. As we all know, that war was fought on a terrifying scale as for the first time ever, the global powers of the world clashed, costing the lives of millions on both sides.

For four long years, the war raged on land, sea and in the air and millions of men were called to arms, many to die in the service of their country. Technology advanced quickly and it wasn’t long before the combatants unleashed the latest weapons of destruction in their arsenals, terrifying tools of war designed to wreak the utmost destruction on any enemy force.

All three services had a part to play in defeating the enemy and never before in any conflict had any of them relied on the technology available at the time. From the trenches of France to the North Sea, men struggled against overwhelming odds to ensure our country remained free from tyranny.

Here at The London Mint Office, we have honoured those who served on land, at sea or in the air by combining three fascinating coins into one wonderful set, each paying homage to a different arm of the services at the time.

BY LAND: The Mark V Tank

The horrors of the First World War are well documented and who can forget the historic and sobering images of the many men struggling to survive in the mud filled trenches across France and Belgium. This coin recreates a scene on the western front where a group of soldiers gather around a Mark V tank, one of the mechanical innovations that hastened the end of the war.

BY SEA: The Battleship

When war broke out in 1914, Britain had the largest and most powerful navy in the world. These behemoths were at the forefront of our country’s defence and sailors faced the dangers of the unforgiving sea on a daily basis. This coin depicts two battleships steaming into action, one with its powerful guns blazing against an unseen foe.

BY AIR: The Plane

Airpower was relatively new in WWI and the air force had to learn and adapt as it went along. Luckily the technology advanced very quickly and soon, command of the skies became a very important part of any battle. This coin shows a German triplane engaging a British biplane in a dog fight in the skies above some unknown battlefield.
