In 2016, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her 90th birthday. Never before has a British monarch reached the grand age of 90. To commemorate this milestone, British and Commonwealth coin designer, Raphael Maklouf has created his official 90th birthday portrait of the Queen and it now adorns this ¼ sovereign. Maklouf, whose designs first appeared on British coinage in 1985, was determined only the most fitting coin was issued to mark the 90th birthday.

The design of the reverse was inspired by one of Queen Elizabeth II’s favourite royal events – Maundy Thursday. The only event where gifts in the form of silver coins are given by the Queen to deserving members of communities across Britain. One of the silver coins given by the Queen is the threepence, which inspired the design for The Queen’s 90th Birthday 1/4 Sovereign.

Struck in solid 22 carat gold, this sovereign is a lasting memorial to nine decades gloriously accomplished.
