Obverse: Depicts the fifth and latest effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark unveiled in 2015.
Reverse: The only known photograph of the Duke of Wellington is believed to have been taken on his 75th birthday in 1844.
The elder statesman must have been sufficiently intrigued by the new medium to sit patiently for the 20 minute exposure time required for the daguerreotype, which is reproduced here with the kind permission of the current Duke of Wellington.
The process used a sheet of highly polished silver-plated copper exposed to iodine to capture an extremely delicate image on the mirrored surface. After exposure, the plate was then developed over heated mercury until an image appeared, and further chemicals were added to stabilize the image so that it could be viewed in natural light. Wellington was one of the first celebrities to be photographed.
