Last year, in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the birth of Wellington, The London Mint Office released a beautiful commemorative coin set that paid tribute to the life and legacy of Arthur Wellesley, the first Duke of Wellington. Struck in collaboration with The Wellington Museum at Apsley House, the set, through a series of photographic portraits, commemorates Wellington following his decisive victory at the Battle of Waterloo.

A superb tactician and strategist on the battlefield, Wellesley boldly took the initiative, maintaining discipline and keeping calm under fire. After winning accolades in Flanders, he was promoted to the rank of major general, and back home he became a Member of Parliament. Following his great success in the Peninsular War, Wellesley returned to a hero’s welcome and a new title: the Duke of Wellington.

Just 29,999 sets available worldwide

Limited to just 29,999 sets worldwide, the coins in the set have been layered in pure 24-carat Gold and have been expertly printed with photographic portraits of the great British military hero.

When the duke died on 14 September 1852, Queen Victoria described him simply as “the greatest man this country ever produced”.  His body was taken to London, where he was given a state funeral – one of only a handful of British subjects to be honoured in that way. The funeral took place on 18 November that year and Lord Tennyson himself penned the - "Ode on the Death of the Duke of Wellington," an extraordinary tribute to his stature at the time.
