Each year on 11th November, Britain remembers the most brutal and devastating conflicts that the world has seen but it also pays tribute, appreciation and respect to the fallen heroes of our servicemen. The tradition was inaugurated by King George V in 1919 in remembrance to members of the armed forces who died in the line of duty. This year, we commemorate the centenary of Armistice Day and how on 11th November 1918 peace became possible after four years of total barbaric warfare.
Designed by Maurice Pierse, the Armistice & Remembrance 100 Half Sovereign depicts the Battle of Loos - the biggest attack of 1915. We see a soldier crouching and firing while surrounded by heavily damaged buildings as the war rages on.
