The Mount Rushmore Memorial in the Black Hills of South Dakota is known as the “Shrine of Democracy”. Between 1927 and 1941, sculptor Gutzon Borglum and his team of 400 workers carved the heads of four US Presidents into the rockface.  Every year, nearly three million people visit the memorial to see the giant faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.

In 1991, the US Mint m1arked the 50th Anniversary of the completion of Mount Rushmore with a one-year-only silver dollar, as an enduring tribute to one of the great artistic wonders of the world. Some of the profits raised from the commemorative coin program went to the Mount Rushmore National Memorial Society to help promote and preserve the monument for future generations.

Designed by Marika H. Somogyi and modelled by Chester Young Martin, the obverse of the coin depicts the mountainside carving of the Four Presidents with laurel wreaths and a ribbon inscribed with the motto “In God We Trust”. Other inscriptions include the word  “Liberty” above the Monument and the words “Golden Anniversary Mount Rushmore National Memorial “ and the date of issue “1991” below it.

The reverse design was created by Frank Gasparro and depicts the Great Seal of the United States with a sunburst and the outline of the United States. A star marks the location of Mount Rushmore with an inscription “Shrine of Democracy”. The remaining inscriptions include the name “United States of America”, the motto “E Pluribus Unum” (‘Out of many, one), and the denomination “One Dollar”.
