The gold sovereign is one of the most recognisable gold coins in the world. Originally struck by the Tudor monarchs to showcase their power and wealth, the sovereign has, since 1817, been struck to an exact specification which hasn't changed in over two hundred years.

The first modern sovereign struck in 1817 depicted Saint George and the Dragon sculpted by the Italian engraver Benedetto Pistrucci. His neo-classical masterwork has proved to be enduringly popular and still appears on many sovereigns struck today.

Benedetto’s great-great-great niece Angela Pistrucci is an acclaimed international artist who studied her craft at the highly prestigious Italian Mint in Rome. In 2019 her strikingly original depiction of Saint George and the Dragon entitled, ‘Into the Dragon’s Lair’ was proudly exhibited in the mint’s museum alongside Benedetto's. Angela presents England’s patron saint with his feet planted firmly on the ground, after having either dismounted or been thrown from his horse. He looks at the snarling dragon as it rises before him and prepares to engulf him in flames.

This Quarter Sovereign has been struck as a reverse proof, where the ‘mirror-like’ background and ‘frosted’ detail have been reversed. This gives the background a matt appearance, allowing Angela’s design to sparkle.
