2017 marked the 200th anniversary of one of the worlds most famous coins - the modern British Sovereign.

First struck in 1817, this solid gold coin was designed by renowned Italian sculptor Benedetto Pistrucci. His iconic depiction of Saint George slaying the Dragon first featured in 1817 surrounded by a garter with the inscription "Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense" which translates to "Shame be to him who thinks evil of it".

This inscription was a way of telling the public not to think badly of the new gold coin, due to the fact that it was only really available to the wealthy due to the coins high value.

Within just 3 short year, Pistrucci himself was to alter the design, removing this garter, not to be seen again on the coin until almost 200 years later on the Benedetto Pistrucci 2017 Half Sovereign.

This set includes the celebratory 2017 Benedetto Pistrucci Half Sovereign, plus an exclusive Angela Pistrucci 2017 Half Sovereign!

In 2017, The London Mint Office had the honour of working with Angela Pistrucci, Benedetto's great-great-great grand neice, and for this special anniversary Angela designed a new rendition of Saint George slaying the Dragon to feature on the sovereigns for one year only. This coin is exclusive to customers of The London Mint Office, making this set very sought after by collectors.
