In 1994, the US Mint celebrated the bicentennial of the US Capitol Building in Washington D.C. with a new silver dollar. Uncirculated coins were struck at the Denver Mint, and superior Proof quality version was struck at the San Francisco Mint.
The artist William C. Cousins created a design of the US Capitol building dome, with the Statue of Freedom at the top surrounded by a circle of thirteen stars for the coin obverse. The inscription read, “Liberty 1994. Bicentennial of the United States Capitol. In God We Trust.”
For the reverse design, artist John M. Mercanti was inspired by the stained glass window in room S-222 of the Capitol Building. It depicts a majestic eagle with its wings unfurled, above the shield of the United States encircled by laurel leaves. The eagle, which is flanked by United States flags on both sides, holds three arrows and an olive branch in its claws. The inscription features the name ‘United States of America’, its traditional motto, ‘E Pluribus Unum’ (‘Out of many, one’), and the denomination ‘One Dollar’
