The Constitution Dollar was struck in 1987 to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the Constitution of the United States. One of the most important documents ever written, the Constitution was adopted on September 17, 1787and laid out the laws and rights of US citizens.  It remains the foundation on which the United States is governed to this day.

The obverse, Patricia Lewis Verani depicts sheets of parchment with a quill pen, and the first three words of the U.S. Constitution “We the People”.  The reverse design, also by Verani depicts 13 people, who represent the diverse cultural and social spectrum of society within the United States.

Struck to the highest available Proof quality by the United States Mint in San Francisco, the coin is inscribed on the obverse with the words “The US Constitution 200th Anniversary”, “In God We Trust” and “1787 Liberty 1987”. The Reverse has the name ‘United States of America’, its traditional motto, ‘E Pluribus Unum’ (‘Out of many, one’), and the denomination ‘One Dollar’.
