The Liberty Silver Dollar was struck in 1986 to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Statue of Liberty. This was one of the most popular commemorative issues from the United States Mint. The money raised from the sales of the coins paid for the much need restoration of the statue.
The obverse features a full figure view of the Statue of Liberty in front of the main building of Ellis Island with the legend “LIBERTY ELLIS ISLAND, GATEWAY TO AMERICA” above. The obverse also holds the inscriptions “LIBERTY” around the top right periphery and the US official motto “IN GODWE TRUST” towards the bottom right. The date of striking is inscribed below. Struck to the highest available Proof quality by the United States Mint in San Francisco, the coin is inscribed on the obverse with the words “GIVE ME YOUR TIRED, YOUR POOR, YOUR HUDDLED MASSES YEARNING TO BREATHE FREE””, “In God We Trust” and "1986”. The Reverse has the name ‘United States of America’, its traditional motto, ‘E Pluribus Unum’ (‘Out of many, one’), and the denomination ‘One Dollar’.
