The Walking Liberty silver half dollar was issued by the United States Mint between 1916 to 1947. Designed by the acclaimed sculptor and engraver  Adolph A. Weinman,  it depicted Liberty striding towards the sun and was described by art historian Cornelius Vermeule as being one of the most beautiful US coins ever produced.

US Treasury Secretary William G. McAdoo, who oversaw the operation of the Mint, described the obverse and reverse designs, which were both created by Weinman, in his 1916 annual report;

“The design of the half dollar bears a full-length figure of Liberty, the folds of the Stars and Stripes flying to the breeze as a background, progressing in full stride toward the dawn of a new day, carrying branches of laurel and oak, symbolical of civil and military glory. The hand of the figure is outstretched in bestowal of the spirit of liberty. The reverse of the half dollar shows an eagle perched high upon a mountain crag, his wings unfolded, fearless in spirit and conscious of his power. Springing from a rift in the rock is a sapling of mountain pine, symbolical of America.”

The timing of the coin, after the Great War and during a period of great technological expansion is reflected in the design, which showed Liberty walking boldly towards a new dawn.  The complexity of Weinman’s designs were always difficult to strike with the accuracy required by the Mint, and this may account for why they were replaced in 1948. Today, the coin is considered a masterwork, and a triumph of minting excellence.
