During the Great War, (or better known today as World War I), all three services had a part to play in defeating the enemy. It is safe to say that without just one part of our armed forces the war would have gone very differently. Here at The London Mint Office, we have honoured those who serve on land, at sea or in the air by combining three fascinating coins into one wonderful set. Each coin pays homage to a different arm of the services who defended our great nation from tyranny.

  • By Land - This coin recreates a scene on the western front where a group of soldiers gather around a Mark V tank, one of the mechanical innovations that hastened the end of the war.
  • By Sea - When the war broke out in 1914, Britain had the largest and most powerful navy in the world. This coin depicts two battleships steaming into action, one with its powerful guns blazing against an unseen foe.
  • By Air - Air-power was relatively new in WWI and the air force had to learn and adapt as it the war progressed. This coin shows a German triplane engaging a British biplane in a dog fight in the skies.
