Its very name proclaimed it ‘the gold of the king’: The Gold Sovereign.

The gold sovereign coin is a Tudor invention, initially commissioned in 1489 by Henry VII, the first Tudor monarch. Sovereigns were struck for over a hundred years by all the Tudor monarchs – and all their sovereign coins depicted an enthroned portrait of the monarch who issued the coin.

But following the death of the last Tudor queen, Queen Elizabeth I, the image of the monarch seated on their throne largely stopped appearing on gold coins of the realm.

Because the first silver sovereign was not issued until 2019 under Queen Elizabeth II, this is the FIRST EVER enthroned portrait of any monarch on a Silver Sovereign coin!

We are honoured to present The 535th Anniversary of the Sovereign Proof Silver Sovereign – the first silver sovereign in history to feature an enthroned portrait of any monarch!
