In the 200th anniversary year of King George IV’s momentous Coronation, live through the silver age of the sovereign with the Silver Shield Five-Coin Sovereign Set – the VERY FIRST SILVER SOVEREIGNS IN HISTORY to feature the monarch’s illustrious and world-renowned shield design. Struck in .999 pure silver and struck to the highest possible standard, Proof quality, this world’s first set comprises a quarter, half, full, double, and quintuple silver sovereign.

When King George IV came to the throne in 1821, he had already led an incredibly lavish lifestyle. A ‘playboy’ Prince Regent for nine years prior, George IV was disliked by many for his extravagance and indulgent spending, but he undoubtedly left in his wake an astonishing legacy…

A fashionably modern and debonair man about town, King George IV believed he had a reputation to uphold, and so was outraged by Benedetto Pistrucci’s realistic 1821 sovereign portrait of a now-overweight and middle-aged monarch, that he requested a new portrait – this time modelled on an attractive marble bust of himself created by Sir Francis Chantrey.

Pistrucci’s unwillingness to create a new portrait that flattered the King would see him replaced by an artist who would. And in a further act of vengeance, King George IV dropped Pistrucci’s Saint George and the dragon masterwork from the sovereign.

Pistrucci’s replacement, Jean-Baptiste Merlen created the sovereign’s new reverse design featuring the iconic shield- a design to this day, considered to be “one of the finest coin designs in history”.
